We take all ecosystem services for granted

Now it is time to envision what business could look like in the not too distant future.

Why?

Until now we have ignored the fact that we are using up the Natural Capital rather than living of Nature’s interest. The ecosystem services (ESS) are all the services that other living organisms create for us, such as production of food and timber, regulating services such as climate regulation, cleaning of air and water, and supportive services such as the exchange of nutrients between plant and soil.

We take all these services for granted. In fact: we have built our entire economy upon the assumption that they will always be available and unending.

How?

At Globe Forum Stockholm 2011 we will highlight the important difference between the current sustainability paradigm, which minimizes the damage but does not necessarily create long-term solutions, and the new paradigm of production and consumption, which must take the long-term health of the Natural Capital into account.

Pavan Sukdev, study leader for a recent EU-sponsored report on “The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity” estimates that the value of the Natural Capital that we lose $2 to 5 trillion every year.

Business innovation for sustainable growth!

Globe Forum is convinced, that with the new initiatives taken by the United Nations to put a value on the ESS, that the business opportunities of this transition eventually will be enormous and that the companies starting now to take the first steps in this inevitable transition of the global economy will be the winners!

Join us at Globe Forum Stockholm 2011that  will be held at the brand new Stockholm Waterfront congress hall on 11-12 May 2011.
